Roughly fifty automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.
Police report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been placed in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then found many other smeared cars and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state early analysis suggest the substance was probably human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; investigators are presently not aware of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to resolve the incident" and have requested to the community for details.
A senior political figure commented the vandalism left him without words and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he stated on social media, referring to the murder of nine victims by a assailant aiming at individuals of foreign heritage in 2020.
