European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A US district judge has halted attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The official stated the case was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts point out that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
