The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in September and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.

This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a assembly of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on online platforms on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's ruling was the possibility of Bolsonaro's move to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a history of planning to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The court filing emphasizes that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is situated around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist American leader President Trump, leading him to enact a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

He is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will have a custody hearing on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also asked that the former president be permitted to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he demanded regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which involved plans to murder the current president and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The plot was thwarted because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. His successor was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many his backers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.

The police intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the period, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The former president called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 national vote.
