The platform is rolling out a new feature that enables them to lessen the amount of AI-made media appearing in their streams. This initiative comes as the platform disclosed that it currently hosts over 1 bn AI-generated clips.
Testing and Rollout
This change is in a pilot phase over the coming weeks before a widespread rollout. This development comes amid a surge in AI content, driven by new AI video creators.
AI Proliferation Online
It has been noted that almost 10% of the fastest-growing content creators on a popular video site only show content made by AI. A significant portion of this material is classified as low-quality AI content, a phrase for poor-quality, mass-produced content that is often absurd or dreamlike.
“We know from our community that many people appreciate content created using AI tools, from AI artwork to informative clips, and we want to provide users the power to see more or less of that, based on their own choices,” commented a spokesperson.
AI on the Platform
The platform shared that there are now over a billion videos on its service identified as AI-generated. Overall, more than 100 m pieces of content are added to the platform daily, making AI-generated material a limited portion of its total content library.
How to Adjust Settings
Members will be in a position to decrease or raise the amount of artificial media they view by opening the topic control setting in the platform and picking “AI-generated content”. Other topics that can already be controlled under the filter encompass politics, clothing, aesthetics, and choreography.
AI Disclosure Rules
TikTok’s policies require content makers to identify “realistic” AI-made content, and it bans harmful fake videos of well-known individuals or critical incidents. Any realistic artificial content that is without a tag can be deleted under its terms of service.
In addition, the platform will now attach an AI-generated tag to content created with its built-in AI features, or flagged by an cross-platform project for identifying AI-generated material. This step is designed to help prevent users from trying to bypass the labeling process.
Educational Initiatives
The platform is also launching a $2m awareness program for professionals and groups to create learning resources about using AI responsibly. This program will benefit educational bodies focused on training computer science.
Content Safety Approach
TikTok has justified its safety measures, following discussion over proposals to lay off a large number of content moderators in Britain. TikTok is planning to eliminate hundreds of positions in its content moderation team in the UK capital, with worker representatives and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that staff are being displaced by machine-led review.
A company official stated that human moderation would continue to be important, but AI can shield workers by removing the most distressing content before it has to be seen by humans. The company announced a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content reviewed by content reviewers over the previous year due to intervention by its machine learning processes.
“We think that it’s essential to combine people and machines to ensure user safety,” the executive stated. “We’ll have staff as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to minimize viewing of unsafe media as swiftly, which is where a lot of the machine support is proving valuable work at speed.”
